So how does it work?

Electric lighters which can also be called plasma or arc lighters are small gadgets created to replace conventional rechargeable lighters and work by replacing the flame with an electric arc.

An electric arc or arc discharge is an electrical breakdown of a gas that produces an ongoing electrical discharge.

Current going through a normally nonconductive medium, such as air in our case, produces a plasma. The electrical resistance along the continuous electric arc creates heat.

Electrical breakdown happens when current starts flowing through an electrical insulator(air in our case) as the voltage applied to it exceeds the breakdown voltage, making the insulator electrically conductive.

Plasma is a state of matter in which an ionized gaseous substance becomes highly electrically conductive to the point that long range electric and magnetic fields dominate the behavior of the matter. 

Is it safe?

At this point you might be a bit scared as everything seems a bit complicated, but you don’t have to be! Electric arcs and plasma have been known and used safely for more than 200 years for education and entertainment or for more nerdy purposes like in vacuum system leak detectors.

More common purposes are plasma displays, fluorescent lamps, neon signs or even welding.
